After a very enjoyable visit last year was glad to make the trek to keep Subvert on the list of excellent underground punk mini-festivals that are scattered around the country.  With a trip on anyway was also able to bundle a couple of the Auralskit members in from Scouseland as well as some other regular reprobates and we were down at venue early evening on the Friday.

FOAD Festival

Sound Control, Manchester

We usually come out of winter hibernation for the silly season of self-abuse that is the festivals when Hammerfest tempts us in mid-March. This year there was a new kid on the city block in the form of FOAD (make up your own acronym interpretation) to put a spring in our step now spring is kind of here.   Set up by a few of the promoters who deal with the more extreme musical end of things in the city, and homed in the decent and underused Sound Control venue, there is an excellent line up of the cream of the underground acts plus some special treats from abroad that demands attendance, especially with it relative proximity.

Across the snowy wastes to West Yorkshire, travelling really wasn’t that bad and the scenery great. And I wasn’t the furthest traveller as the two main bands from Scotland were coming back from London on this mini-tour, was glad to see they had made it too. As usual I’d heard a couple of their tracks on underground crust/grind compilations knocking about, and they provided plenty of incentive to trek over, in addition to the knowledge that lots of the locals would hopefully brave the elements for the warmth of some blistering riffs.
