GIG REVIEW – Devour, Abominate, Auralskit, Dedicate @ Maguires, Liverpool

With the FA Cup shenanigans of Liverpool and Everton in L4 we opted for the comfort of the train from Rhyl to the sunny climes of Maguires Pizza Bar in L1. It’s my first gig of the year, the first of many in my continuing quest toward permanent deafness… Who said that?

This was the gig that was on then off then on again then not at the original venue then off then on somewhere else…
Maybe it was us (Spam Javelin), maybe we were the curse when it came to Liverpool hosting three Welsh bastards. Earlier last month we were due to play in some sweat shop in Chinatown, but it was pulled, then this morning the {new} promoter had received a message from a Manchester band telling him not to put us on as we were homophobic, sexist pricks and mud sticks (!!!). He was told we were getting a bad reputation and it was obvious with a name like ours… (If that’s the case, then Rudimentary Peni are obviously homophobic sexist pricks too…)
It turned out the perpetrator was pissed and had got us mixed up with some other band (fucking bellend).

Adversity, the random trials of life strengthening community resolve to strive their way to a better situation. That was a reason why the 1 in 12 club was set up in response to the wonderful success the Tories were making of parts of the country in the 1980’s and what a perfect setting for localish crust legends Doom to host this festival.

dismalA good mix of the alternative extremes in the underground metal and punk scenes, gathered together for a fundraiser for people living in the day to day extreme of Palestine, that intangible place in danger of being wiped off the map indefinitely.  The original promoter having been otherwise occupied (like the territories) guys from the bands had taken up the reins to ensure this event went ahead and make some success of it seeing as it was already up against it, being on a Sunday.

REVIEW – Means To An End Festival 2013 (sunday) @ Wharf Chambers, Leeds

infernoh leeds

Have daytripped over to this punk festival a few times previously, this time with the bonus of playing too.  Two messy days had already been completed at the 1 in 12 Club in Bradford before the Sunday social shifted over to Leeds, and another excellent cooperative run independent venue.  Some may have fallen by the wayside on the journey, but plenty of fresh troops of tomorrow had turned up to give a healthy turnout for this rainy evening.
