REVIEW – Hammerfest V @ Haven Pwllheli

Another salubrious holiday destination for us to enjoy/abuse as our local international metal festival shifts from its previous home in Pontin’s, Prestatyn further out to the wild west. Slightly more inconvenient for us never mind the rest of the travellers from around the country but we’re not looking the gift horses of the usual free tickets in the mouth so saddle up in El’s stagecoach motorhome and head for the hillbilly hills. To be fair the organisers really seem to have upped their game in terms of the acts booked too, some real name bands from the States and Europe, so bringing them to this little corner of North Wales is to be appreciated

Roadburn Festival, Tilburg, Holland – Day 1

As I’m sure you’ll remember, in my review of my first visit to Roadburn last year I said after the joy of two of their sets how wonderful it would be to get Voivod playing one of their albums in its entirety. Lo and behold, the power of my will triumphed again and not only were they back to play my favourite “Dimension Hatross” but they were also curating a day of the event. That album would be enough to get me here (3000 tickets selling out in 7 minutes permitting), as was Godflesh’s “Streetcleaner” last year, but as time went on gem after gem of salivating prospects were unveiled and for all its relative expense it was a blow out to look forward too.

Am I getting old? Well, there are two sides to every coin and the fact that I was sober for this outing made the answer more yes than no!

Sonisphere

[Found this started but never finished review I was to do of the Sonisphere Festival – I guess the Festival count took it’s creative toll this year..!!]

It’s been a long summer and it’s only the first week of August. Sonisphere being the 7th maybe 8th Festival I’ve attended this year, and there’s still a couple more to do. Decided early on that 2009 would be one big festival, and why the hell not eh? What’s wrong with shaving 5 years off your life if that five years was going to be spent shitting your pants in an old people’s home?

Killing Joke, Tribazik @ Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall

Looking forward to seeing tonight’s openers “Tribazik” as I had stumbled across their website a while back & listened to a couple of their tracks which were interesting. Sort of Drum n bass, tribal, experimental, prog sort of thing, not unlike the type of thing the excellent “Redbeat” were doing in the early 80’s. While I mention “Redbeat” for those of you that may remember them & liked their music, they released “The lost album” sometime last year, finally getting their tracks on CD, very good it is as well. Back to tonight’s proceedings.
