Hellfest 2013, Day 1

enter hellClisson, France

If you are planning a trip abroad effective acclimatisation can’t be underestimated.  So for our annual expedition to the eclectically extreme French festival we started on the Wednesday in Rhyl with some excellent punk bands and a general innoculation of scumminess.  Then a trip to the nefarious Capper Arms in Wrexham to ramp up the strength of drinking, followed by the tricky hurdling of a 2 hour delay at the airport Thursday morning with breaking into the emergency rations at the airport bar.  Things were well warmed up by the time we landed in the lands of our Breton brethren, and went subsequently went even more wrong with the discovery of the legendary Maximator (11.6% beer) at the local supermarket.  Caught a couple of warm up bands in the camping entertainment tent but when all the black absinthe had been flamethrowered away it was time to settle in for the proper fun ahead.

Again, it’s the moment’s reflection on the closing Sunday of the festival that sums up the chaos of the proceding. On the last leg and our last legs with NY hardcore legends Madball at the punkish Warzone Tent, they exhorted us to expend our last energies in the pit acknowledging what a GRUELLING time these festivals were. And we had to admit it, why put ourselves through this uncivilised punishment? Have we sinned so badly? Ha, yes of course, with our hedonistic debauchery to the tune of countless (well, a ludicrous 50+ for me) unholy racket bands. The piper (and the bassist) must be paid!

I think I referred to being in the presence of legends in one of our previous three visits to Hellfest, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler then and this year the daddy of them all, Ozzy Osbourne himself providing one of the headliners but for me the legends I appreciate the most on these expeditions are my friends, this mutual kindness, laughter and insanity.

You think we’d learn our lesson, putting ourselves through Hell for the second year running. But we had learnt, our efficiency in getting ourselves to France in one piece, fucked up royally in the meantime, before returning minus just a few vital bits after the weekend, was all done with great, even worrying, smoothness of a well oiled war machine. Must have been something to do with the lubrication.
