Welsh Rebel Outpost @ Nant Gwrtheyrn  11/11/12

So the bass came out of retirement, the excuse was that this was my 50th Birthday Party but the actual birthday had long gone (July 1st). One way or another I’d been far too busy to sort anything out for July and it was in fact an old school friend who suggested that I should do something to celebrate / mark my 50th.

Rock Against The Rich Tour 1988.

Anhrefn were busy during this period, we had released our first album ‘Defaid, Skateboards a Wellies” on the Worker’s Playtime and  were generally out and about doing gigs around the UK. We had also already started to tour Europe from early 1988 and the NME was the weekly read in the tour van. We’d check out NME for any reviews or whatever and on this particular day a tour by Joe Strummer had just been announced under the banner of Rock Against The Rich.

In 1984 one person started something that would have a major effect on Welsh music, Welsh attitudes and the way English people perceive the Welsh.
That forward thinking person set up Recordiau Anhrefn; first as a vinyl outlet for his own band, Yr Anhrefn, (releasing a green vinyl 7″ single), but more importantly to promote and release Welsh language music by bands who were not going to get any joy out of an archaic Welsh music industry and dismal Welsh media.

Rhys Mwyn interview in Rock ‘n’ Reel magazine

“Are you feeling peckish?” asks Rhys Mwyn. “I could just do with something to eat…”
Galeri, Caernarfon, is a wonderful building, a complex of performance art, cinema and office space for go-ahead companies; fortunately for Rhys there’s a café and bar just downstairs. We detour to a table, order drinks and Rhys decides upon a huge plateful of grilled tortilla chips littered with cheese and peppers.Whilst munching these he delivers Mwyn philosophy.
“I want everything to be almost bespoke. I mean, variety is the essence but what we do should be cool…”
