GIG REVIEW – 2 Sick Monkeys, Rabo De Toro, Emissaries Of Syn, Maines, Spam Javelin @ The Marine, Old Colwyn
Tonight’s (almost) stellar line up of 2 Sick Monkeys, Rabo De Toro, Emissaries Of Syn, Maines, Spam Javelin was quite mouthwatering. This was reflected by the numbers in attendance here in the backroom of The Marine Hotel in Old Colwyn. The early start did not hinder the figures, with attendees not having yet latched on to the Manchester / Liverpool trend of turning up late to avoid the support acts… No supports here though, no room for egos in our punk scene…
As I’ve reviewed four the bands several times and play in the other one, I’d best leave it to Rich Phillips to described the evening…
Oh what a night….!
Last ever 2 Sick Monkeys gig in North Wales. Pete and Fred showing in full just why they are the most respected and loved punk band. Sayonara boys.
Brilliant send off and what a line up of local acts put together by Mark Watson-Jones for this at the Marine Hotel in Old Colwyn. Really showcased the talented and diverse music scene we have right here right now (Morvo, White Ether, Lolfa Binc, Habits and others not even on the bill).
Spam Javelin opened the evening with equal amounts of aggression and humour and boss new tunes. Oh and we don’t really hate you Mr. Crud ?.
[Neil Crud] – Was good to have ex-Spammer Steve Brute accept the invitation to sing Nazi Line Dancers Fuck Off.
The aural beauty that is Maines were simply incredible and are one of those rare bands that send tingles down your spine. So many people nodding, smiling and agreeing how good they are… See them, that’s on order!!
Our fearless leader and event organiser Mark was up next with the mighty Emissaries Of Syn and we find them at their sludgy best and slaying us like only they can.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have witnessed Rabo De Toro a few times now and what a show they put on. It’s a unique experience. The mix of brilliant musicianship and the intense frontman Charlie Garlic spitting out his vitriol and commentary on modern life is spot on and leaves everyone grinning and wanting the night to never finish.
Onto the main event (I would of paid and travelled to see any of the bands tonight on their own however) it’s 2 Sick Monkeys time!!
What a treat. Love Pete’s stories and rants and boy can these two play. Nobody does drum ‘n’ bass like they do. Gonna be sadly missed but many great memories and the new album is boss so buy it now!!!!!
On a side note… What a great venue (with a decent sound) the Marine Hotel is and thank you to the staff and locals for being lovely to us.
NWPR alive and in good health.
[Mark Watson-Jones adds] That was special! couldn’t have asked for a better night at The Marine Hotel, thanks so much for hosting us. Blown way by the quality of the bands and all you folks for turning out to give the marvellous 2 Sick Monkeys the send off they deserved from these parts. £318 raised for TAPE Community Music and Film, your generosity does good things! Put December 1st in your diary for the next event, in Llandudno, will be like nothing you’ve seen before!
