  1. Dan Amor & Huw Owen – Mothers In Day-Glo

    Swooshed was a compilation album released on leap day by Recordiau Cae Gwyn and this song is my favourite of 2016. I cannot stop playing it. A collaboration between Cae Gwyn’s Dan Amor and Mr Huw’s Huw Owen – it reminds me of c1970 Pink Floyd – utterly infectious.

  2. Fiona & Gorwel Owen – Faintest Idea

    Again off that same compilation album, and again utterly infectious. This song is pure perfection… Those chord changes..!! A true hairs on the back of neck moment.

  3. Depraved State – Civilian

    I could have chosen any of the 6 tracks that feature on this incredible release that emerged at the end of summer. Pure, brutal hardcore in 51 seconds.

  4. Rabo De Toro – Sleep
    This Bangor band sprung up and headbutted everyone who saw their compellingly animated shows this year. The debut EP came out in October and did not disappoint.

  5. Emissaries Of Syn – Weak, Inherently

    From Conwy come EOS with this blistering beauty. Socio-political and thrash/doom laden and available as a Split 7″ EP (with Spam Javelin) and on the ‘Clean Slate EP’

  6. James PM Phillips – Give Me Wings

    Taken off James’ LP ‘Sheep On The Downs’ (released in April), this live version is so uplifting; it’ll give you wings (same sentiments as #2).

  7. Sleep Beggar – Lonely Outpost

    Not content with just the UK, Jamie has been playing shows in the US and bringing artistes over here. Off the ace LP ‘Depression Tactics’ released in August – this is ace.

  8. Spectralate – By The Time I Get To Pentrfoelas

    Alan Holmes (Ectogram) and Annie Pye released their 2nd LP in April – ‘All Terrain Badgers’ on Turquoise Coal Recs, and this song is a work of pure genius.

  9. Bad Mood – May 2nd

    Prestatyn and Meliden exiles Tom and Liam formed Liverpool’s Bad Mood, and this is their debut single and an absolute earworm.

  10. Gruff Rhys – I Love EU

    What can you say about this? The man is on another plain, high above anyone else. Released in April ahead of the EU Referendum.

  11. Pulco – Solid Geometry

    Such is the proliferation on Pulco’s releases that this 7″ EP has been followed by 2 albums! You never know what to expect.. Long may it continue.

  12. Habits – Knife Fight

    Colwyn Bay punk rockers Habits burst onto the scene in the summer with a demo full of punch and great live shows… Looking forward to 2017.

  13. Skinflick – Fire, Skulls & Pin-up Girls

    Bangor’s Skinflick returned in April with the skull crushing album ‘I’m Pissing On You But The Fire Has Long Since Gone Out’ a bruising 45 mins of industrial strength hatred.

  14. Lovers Open Fire – Circa

    From Wrexham, Lovers Open Fire released this great single in April. You need to see these live… Excellent stoner-speed-psyche-rock.

  15. Brython Shag – Blaenau A Port

    I could’ve taken any track off this superb eponymous debut album from these dirty Blaenau Ffestiniog based trudge-rockers.

  16. Ffug – Love Is Stupid

    Hailing from Crymych, Ffug sprang into life after a promising debut in 2105. Supports for Super Furry Animals saw a good year for them. This great single came out in April.

  17. Maines – Clocks

    The more I see Maines from Conwy, the better they get. So much I released their debut EP ‘Frequncies’ in the spring. Like being mortar bombed from all sides.

  18. Mr Phormula – Bills

    Ed Holden is Llanfrothen’s Mr Phormula – Bills is taken from his ‘Llwybrau EP’ released in July. Ed, we kneel before thee.

  19. Twisted Ankle – Cilla Black

    South Wales noise merchants released their ‘Eat a Phone EP’ in October. Sounding like a chewed up Fugazi meets Mclusky… Ace.

  20. The Immediate – Yoko

    After lying dormant for almost 2 decades, this Mold band dusted off those dirty guitars to release the mighty fine ‘Shadows & Ghosts EP’ in September. Great stuff.

  21. Cult Of Free Love – Jeya Deva

    A Rhyl/Swansea project that produced an excellent album released in August called ‘Love Revolution’ full of tantric, mantric dreamscapes… This track was also a single.

  22. Courteous Thief – Once Burnt

    Llandudno’s CT really pulled the rabbit out of the hat with both this brilliant song and brilliant video… Enjoy…

    From Deeside, Plastic released their debut EP ‘Drop’ in March. Great song this…

  24. Tremolo Ghosts – Honey Bones

    Bristol’s Tremolo Ghosts added a new lower level to lo-fi with the LP ‘Supercomputer Designs Seashell’ on lathe cut vinyl. A real beauty out on Recordiau Prin.

  25. Datblygu – Ond Nawr Mae’r Hyn (HiTS remix)
    This is a remix by Swansea’s Head In The Shed from Datblygu’s album ‘Porwr Trallod’ released in Dec15 on Ankst. Only online version to listen to is on my TudnoFM show (listen here)

    Caernarfon’s Sera has had a busy year and released this damn fine album ‘Little Girl’ in September. Here’s the beautiful title track.

  28. Teeth Crack – Years Of Grief

    After leaving Depraved State, Rhyl’s Cooper created a monster called Teeth Crack, and released the LP ‘I Come To You In Robes Of Grief,’ in October.

  29. John Lawrence – Insectoid Shopping Spree

    Talking of creating monsters, this ex-Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci cerainly did that with this Dorian Grey-esq single… Absolute inspired lunacy…

  30. Roseville Band – Order

    Wrexham’s cowpunk indie slammers The Roseville Band have a very immediate sound, which is very much in your face with this great single released in May.

  31. Andy Bob Beaumont – Daily Life

    Turquoise Coal Records released Andy’s album ‘Shed Songs’ in April. Here’s my favourite off this fine record from this Bangor troubadour.

  32. Chupa Cabra – My Girl

    Right at the start of 2016, this Deeside band popped up with a great 7″ single. As colourful as their live performances. Check ’em out before their girl lays her eggs in you.

  33. Kyle Lee – Nevermore

    Kyle is in Gintis and Mexican Walking Fish. He also occasionally releases solo material like this astonishingly beautiful song in November.

  34. Pale Angels – Loveless

    Also out in November, from Swansea and New York (as ya do), Pale Angels bring out their 2nd LP ‘Daydreaming Blues’ – pure filthy punk-blues out on Specialist Subject Records.

    Love this single… Came out in May… Nothing else is needed… Just listen…

  36. Mr Huw – Saim Gwahanol

    ‘Gwna Dy Feddwl I Lawr’ is the 5th album from Pen Llyn’s Mr Huw. Released in November on Recordiau Cae Gwyn, it again shows the dark side of indie-pop.

  38. Trecco Beis – Sofia

    South Wales surfing hippies released a great single in April on Popty Ping Records (in sky blue vinyl). This is the sunniest B-side of the year.

  39. Zombie Dub – I Rise

    To celebrate the resurrection at Easter. Zombie Dub, a Bangor / Rhyl collaboration released this piece of gothed up brilliance as a very limited edition 7″ single. Only 3 copies exist.

  40. Super Furry Animals – Bing Bong

    I thought this was rubbish when it came out. As an unofficial football song to cheer on the mighty Wales, it is in-fact inspired, sublime and all-out genius.
