It’s pretty hard to choose your 20 link2wales related tracks for 2014, so I chose 19…
MEILIR – Next
Pure beauty… Knocked me out when I first heard it. This is the second track from his Arabella single. I could have put any of the three tracks here, or all three. Play very loud and close your eyes.
ORIENT MACHINE – Amity
I have not a clue what it’s about, hard to fathom the lyrics as Moz sings like Richard Jobson – but who cares. This is my ear-worm of 2014 – forever singing it. I could have included the follow up, Hecktor, which is on a par to Amity, but it’s not out until January 2015 – so expect it in next year’s list!
GULP – Game Love
Not strictly a 2014 tune, but was re-released this year on the Late Night Tales compilation series, which is good enough for me. Wonderfully haunting, terrifically daunting.
SEX HANDS – Tommy
This is just brilliant pop music by a bunch of lunatics. ‘I’m not telling you twice, don’t roll the dice.’ Love it, fucking love it…
REVOLUTIONARY SPIRIT – Sunshine
Another band I discovered thanks to the live highlight of the year; that being Focus Wales festival. Picked up this 7″ single – it’s Albatross 2014 – I play it to death, there’s a wreckin’ ball in my head.
CROSSBURNER – Burn The Saint
From Milton Keynes and on Holywell’s Footloose Records – blistering hardcore, this is the opener of their very excellent 10″ EP – hang onto your seats, this is rip roaring stuff.
MR PHORMULA – Be Ti’n Gweld_ [Dez Williams – Elektronik Religion remix]
Ed Holden brought out an album, a mix album and a single this year – I was going to include Devious Sprites, but this edged it, the closing track on the single Be Ti’n Gweld – love the District 9 feel about it.
MEXICAN WALKING FISH – Things They Never Change
Perhaps not a 2014 track, it nearly was a single on Link2wales Records last year and again earlier this, but neither band nor label could get it together. One day maybe… Melancholy beauty. Great song.
JOHN MOUSE – Ilka Moor
Mental! No more words necessary…
R.SEILIOG – Peripheral Thermal (Left)
The maestro keeps on maestroing (!) – This is off his new LP ‘In Hz’ – it’s the Future Sound of Denbigh…
CARCHARORION – Beth Yw’r Haf I Mi?
First heard this on the superb CAM1 compilation LP on Peski Records. Since released in it’s own right as part of an EP – Dunno whether it’s because I know the original as my grandparents used to play it, but it’s ace yet, spooky stuff.
DAUWD – Moiety
The entity that is Dauwd, who I believe is from Bangor. Released on 12″ on German based Kompakt Records. Brilliant subsonic piece of work.
GWENNO – Fratolish Hiang Perpeshki
Busy year for Gwenno, and she’s rewarded us with the excellent Y Dydd Olaf LP (on Peski) – I could’ve picked any of the tracks… Here try this beauty of size.
BABY BRAVE – Oyonnax
Another Focus Wales band – Baby Brave breathe fresh air into any room you play them. This is the lead track off their debut EP Kings Horse on Drum With Our Hands Records. Great voice, great tune, great band.
Y FFUG – Llosgwch y Ty i Lawr
A mixed bag debut EP from Y Ffug, ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’ had moments of excellence and moments not so good. This track is just simply ace; another one I can’t stop singing, it’s also a free download so you have no excuse but to add this to your collection.
BLOOD LIPS – Heartbeats
A good and busy year for Blood Lips, worth checking out for their band profile pic alone! Always good live and this track a real crowd pleaser as well as being a favourite in our house!
THIS SYSTEM KILLS – Daily Dose of Hype
Released earlier this year on stunning white vinyl – These South Walian punks bring a well needed dose of punk from the underground. Fast and furious Fuck your radio!!!
HALF AVIAN – Da Vinci Knew
Yep, another Focus Wales find – Half Avian knocked me out with their subtle set last April, and did the same last month with their EP
SECATEURS – Temp
Great track this, love the way it builds up. Walton they sound like The Stooges in a DeLorean – yep, that pretty much sums them up.
