Interesting that Welsh cuture and the media are so closely linked in everyone’s eyes. “Does this always have to be a Media argument.” I would ask – to what extent is it the media’s job to support and fund, or simply to reflect what’s going on? Always a danger when arts become too dependent on media subsidy/financial support for survival, but equally it’s the job of any decent station to reflect the wealth of talent that’s out there.

not just Welsh culture I don’t think. Everything’s become both fragmented into millions of bytes and homogenised at the same time. Fuck knows how this is going to play out but with instant info now fully the norm in the place of actual cultural value then any counterculture’s up against it already. And, for the same reasons, it’s easier than ever to find like-minded bloody-minded buggers to create with outside the mainstream – a concept that’s nebulous at the best of times innit

“from Manchester to Gwynedd in about 34 years.” – well Rhys, I saw Joy Division in Bangor in 1979, so that’s not quite true – more like 6 months! They had a big impact on us teenagers who were forming our first groups at the time as well….

Good article though… agree with most of your points!

Diddorol iawn! This confirmed some of the suspicions that I’ve had for many years, but as an incomer from SE England am usually too afraid to express…

Interesting article, I was at Ruthin Festival yesterday watching Cowbois Rhos Bottwnog and Yr Ods but felt that it was just like Corwen Pavilion in the seventies nothing has really changed although they did have cooler sunglasses! I am still waiting for the welsh Birthday Party.
