Spitting In A Fist Fight

This was a planned compilation CD and DVD scheduled for release on the Secrets of Sound label (Cat No SOS 008). It never got past the planning phase.

ARMY OF CROWS, SKINFLICK Ffridd Bar, Bangor

(narration and pix by Neil Crud)

Billed as ‘Parti Metel’ – that’s Metal Party to you and me, you sensed it was going to be a sparse evening. That has nothing to do with the bands on the bill and everything to do with the city they were playing in.

Crud Gets Excited

It’s not often I get really, really excited about a band. Yes I love music; it’s my life and soul – an obsession bordering on neurosis. From an 11 year old buying The Jam’s ‘When You’re Young’ 7″ single and having to play it at my cousin’s house because we were too poor to afford a record player to releasing LPs with my own band and running my own label.

Skinflick release album

Bangor’s Skinflick release ‘Halo of Flies/The Maggot Circle’, special edition album, Dead Sexy Records, DS505 (originally released as a demo in 2003) – Subsequently gained proper remastering and release in October 2005 with bonus remix CD (The Maggot Circle)

Mayfair Mall fanzine says, ‘Skinflick have a sound that can only be described as post industrialist electro death metal, who’s influences lie in the macabre.  The first thing that grabs you is the vocals of Judas Williams, as the tracks aren’t simply sung, they are etched into your subconscious like some subliminal messages. With the additional vocals of Lady Chaos on a number of tracks lending that extra edge to the tracks.  This isn’t an album that is easily defined. It has that dark electronic feel that would go down well in the clubs in London, but somehow I can’t see it being played on Radio 1.  Tracks of note are the menacing title track ‘Halo of Flies’ and the very dark and haunting ‘& Die’. This double CD has a lot to offer fans of the darker, heavier, more sinister side of metal.  If you like to take a walk on the dark side and lose yourself in a electronic daze, leave all you worries behind you, let out you inner demon and check out Skinflick. However, if you’re of a nervous disposition then I would leave well alone as this album will seriously mess with your head.’

The Time release Poppa

This was the second release from the scouse sounding indie band from Hawarden. Prev called The Times.

Faust, Ectogram @ Hendre Hall, Bangor

(taken from Adam Walton‘s blog)
Tony, Soundhog and I went to Hendre Hall that night to see Faust and Ectogram. The venue is amazing. It’s a very old, split level barn that isn’t – really – wide enough to be sticking bands on… well not bands with members of not inconsiderable girth… and both Ectogram and Faust have members with gloriously prodigious waistlines. I don’t feel so bad about my plasticene tummy now.

Killing Joke, October File @ Bristol Academy

(by guy salvador)
Another Killing Joke tour, another long trek, well not quite, 50 minutes to Bristol Academy really, but again, disappointedly, no South Wales date on this tour. Not that this matters as I have, and I’m sure always will, be prepared to travel wherever the now legendary Jokers play. This gives you a clue to the reverence I hold this band in. In my mind one of the finest ever. Continue reading
