Anhrefn turned up at 8:45pm with the bad news that they had just had a grand’s worth of equipment stolen from their van in Manchester, all they had left to their name were the drums & 2 amps, losing their guitars, an amp & PA.
I guess it was a schoolboy error to leave the van unattended while they went to get some chips. Expensive lunch! Fucking robbing Mancs!
They weren’t sure if they felt like playing, but the fans coaxed them into doing a mooted 20 minute set using 4Q‘s instruments, which they borrowed for a gig the following night in Newcastle.
Both bands decided to do a bunk at the end of the night to avoid paying Alex Higgins £70 for the room, which the bouncers weren’t too pleased about.
Seventeen years later, bassist Rhys Mwyn reflects, ‘I think having the gear stolen that day was a pivotal point in Anhrefn’s career, it knocked the stuffing out of us. Yes, they were only guitars but they had been our guitars from day one.’
A couple of days earlier 4Q paid a visit to Dave Evans’ Studio in Bangor to record Nein Werk & VD with the intention of releasing it as a flexi-disc. The songs were played at a frantic pace, lasting 1.47 minutes & 1.21 minutes respectively. We ‘forgot’ to pay the £60 for the session, which Dave Evans still goes on about to this very day.
